bless the beasts and the children.......

"it's the child who pays....."

here I am, fighting without even a gun
only, there's no one to face me- her family's out for fun.
"I love you too, Mommy," were the words that she said.
And while I looked into her eyes, my heart broke open--and bled.
All the trust and love this child pours out,
unconditional love...without a doubt!
As the hours and days go by, and the child lays waiting,
what are the fears and doubts that mommy is baiting?
Some folks would kill to receive this child's feelings,
sorrowfully the intended recipient is out--wheeling and dealing.
"I want to see her, I know she'll call soon!"
It starts every day, well before noon.
"When's mommy coming? Why don't she call?"
The truth I hide within me, and when alone--I bawl.
These deals and moves and guys- staying awake for days,
it's a living and oh! what a life!
too bad--it's the child...who pays...

this is dedicated to those who are left behind, caring for children--while mommy is out partying, drinking and doing drugs. It is told from the heart of one who was a caretaker for a beautiful little girl named Amber. Next time you hear about child neglect....think twice...be an advocate for our children. They have no voice--they have no choice....

  2. OMG! WTF! Holy Smoke! MyAmbers, if only I knew how to say all there is to say. The world sucks in many different ways to many different people and everyone endures their own pains, but, if they are lucky enough to have that 1 person shoved in there somewhere, the whole sucked-ness and some of the pain disappears as if by magic.
Barney and I both love(d) you. You somehow changed me for the better. That is an accomplishment you can put on your resumes!!

  3. in this world where self gratification is all important, this poem really speaks out. Thank you for sharing it. If it is ok, I would like to print it and pass it along......I know of someone who really needs to see it.

  4. Pass it along, by all means! I wrote this in 5 minutes one bleak and early morning 20 something years ago while lost in another world. Then the Reverend found it while digging through my junk. Is it not odd how things throughout ones life all come together and make you think of another world/life/being? I haven't been a "Believer" since 2nd grade, but all this, ummm, situation, has even my head spinning and thoughts moving in different directions!
So yes, please use it if you think it will help another!!

  5. I have been reading your blogs Diane and just want to say to Rob...nothing "just happens." It either is...or it isn't. However, we are all just like planets in orbit...it wasn't time for certain things to happen until you crossed another path. rob, I appreciate your honesty and childlike appreciation of things. Your words are an inspiration to many I am sure. I too have printed off this poem and will keep it, just as a reminder that in this world, children have no voice or no choice, so the song goes, and we need to be that instrument for them because they will be ours as we grow older. thank you!

  6. I work with high school kids who either have issues related to alcohol and drugs or who live in a home environment that has it. I saw this poem and see that you have given permission to have it copied. I am going to use it also as a part of my work. So often, rob, kids get into drugs or booze because, quite frankly, it is there. Either mom or dad have it handy or they have friends who can get it for them. What begins as just "fun" ends up costing alot of families relationships, friends, jobs and even lives. If this poem can make just ONE child THINK---wow! One family can be saved...and the ripple effect continues! Thank you for caring.

  7. Elizabeth and Peg,
Thank You Both. I have been blown away by the responses people send in! Here I thought I was just another boozer and was ready to die a grumpy old man, then the Rev Diane found me. Actually, she wasn't a Rev until she met me, so that should tell you the impact I have on people! Marry me and you need to become a reverend! Ha!
Seriously tho, MyAmbers was one of the few things in my life that actually changed my thinking forever and made me a better person. I hope you 2, and many others can do the same with the people you deal with.

I am going ahead with an idea I e-mailed to you about. I will share it when I am done and you can help me to fill in a few blanks. I am so lost right now...all I want is my mommy once more...and I don't even have Barney to help me this time. As I have said, though, if I can help just one other person, then my pain will not be wasted. Just to let others know...please, I beg of you...don't destroy the lives of your children all for the sake of getting high....you wanna kill yourself...think of what you are doing to your kids, of what they are witnessing...don't be so selfish. What I have witnessed, no one else should have to go through!
