Thanks, Hallmark!

Mother's Day....now there's nothing like  a greeting card company to capitalize on it. The modern holiday was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother. She then began a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the US. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries and it's now celebrated all over the world.

Have to get mom something....wait! What's with "have to?" Mom gave birth to you! Imagine pushing a watermelon through a hole the size of a straw and you'll know what birth felt like. Then there was potty training, school days, sports, Scouts, band practice and on it went until...driver's ed! Then Prom, wedding...and is she still there with you?

I know of a few people for whom mom has been a saint to them. I also know, sadly, of those for whom mom literally abandoned them to grow up and figure out life on their own. Some did well, others turned to a bad life to make up for what they lacked- namely maternal supervision.

I read a commentary once. It said,"when we watch sports on TV, what do the players do? They wave at the camera and say, 'hi, mom!" When someone has been in an accident and is in pain, who do they call for? Mom. Mothers are undeniably THE person we look to for comfort, for love. Moms are a part of our lives no matter what." NO MATTER WHAT! That bond is there, even when one has suffered abuse at the hands of their mom, when there has been neglect, from birth till death. The Blessed Virgin stood by Jesus' side until He died on the cross. A mom can do no less.
Call your mom today.....don't wait for that holiday to get a cheesy card...write her a letter and tell her how you feel. Include a memory that you and she know. Give her a hug. That will beat a card with a heart on it any day!
Happy Mother's Day to one and all.....
