would you humiliate a child this way?

 

 How far would you go to humiliate a child?...and why would you even want to??

A few days ago, the Fargo, North Dakota news reported how a resident there was planning on handing out notes to kids and their parents instead of candy for Halloween. The letter explained her reason why, going so far as to label kids "obese". I find her judgment call extremely overdone. Many children already are aware of their body size and shape. They have many people around them, from their own doctors to friends and school yard bullies who remind them, so why take a holiday that engages children in some fun and turn it into a true nightmare for them?

This is my opinion: instead of handing out candy, (and remember, you're not even obliged to do so if you are not in the mood to do so) how about handing out something else instead? How about dressing up for the children and giving out tiny treats that include McDonald's Happy Meals toys, little puzzle books, small books, tiny stuffed animals, mardi gras necklaces, buttons, the list is endless. (The Dollar Stores are great places to find this stuff!) It does NOT need to be candy! During the year, I go to garage sales and pick out little Hot Wheels brand cars, small dolls, anything that I can stash in a box and pull out at Halloween to give away. The look on these kids' faces are so priceless! "Hey, look! I got a _____(fill in the blank!)" At the same time, you can make a positive comment to them about their costume, the fun they may be having or other words that validate them as a person and not some punching bag that you feel you must use to lower their self esteem. Life is so short, why do you feel that you would need to make it hard also? Kids are only kids for awhile...help them to grow in a positive way. Don't judge, don't label...encourage instead!
Isn't that what Jesus would do?
