cool...clear...water

Water. You drink it, cook with it, bathe in it, swim in it, go boating on it...water makes plants, trees and grass grow, nourishes animals and people. Our bodies are 93% water. Without water, we would shrivel up and die within three days.
In the news recently:

Much of California is under a severe drought. Reservoirs are drying up, as are the lakes. Glendorra suffered a wildfire due to negligence on the part of several men who started a campfire that quickly spread to nearby shrubs. What saddened me most was seeing the destruction of houses with swimming pools brimming full of water.
In West Virginia, a chemical leak upstream from a river that services a town contaminated the water there. Although authorities claim the water will be safe to drink again...would you?

The major resources of our earth are slowly being taken away. Destroyed. Gone. If you could see the dry lake beds in California, you'd understand the situation better. I get mad when I hear my own kids allow the water to run while they brush their teeth or take long showers. We are the stewards of the earth. Each one of us! You. Me. Them. All of us! When it's gone...it's gone. Then what?

To be responsible, take some time to see how your usage of water helps or hurts another. In the interest of green grass, when there is very little water to go around, let the grass go. Better yet, make a rain garden to catch water before it has a chance to run out of your yard. Have a rain barrel under your gutters or direct the gutter to the yard instead of running down a driveway. Take shorter showers using a low flow shower head. Same with toilets. Skip the dishwasher and wash dishes by hand. Do laundry only when you have full loads. Do you really need a backyard swimming pool? A fountain in a public park is pretty, but it also uses a lot of water. Conserve today to ensure that everyone has water tomorrow.

I know, it sounds so simple, right? So....what is stopping you from doing even one thing...this planet is yours as well as mine. Together, we can keep it alive and nourished for generations to come!

  1. I'll bet if someone were forced to carry water in from a mile away they'd think more about how previous water is. I agree---we waste so much water...it's nuts!
